James Rocke
James Rocke came to the Verde Valley having lived in a variety of places and having a variety of careers.
He was born in North Dakota during the Depression and moved to Los Angeles with his family where he studied Liberal Arts in Compton and went on to Bachelor of Arts Degree at Long Beach State. He went into finance and banking but always came back to woodwork as a pastime, making wood sculptures as trophies for yacht and car clubs.
He and his wife went sailboat cruising along the Pacific coasts of Mexico and Central America and into the Caribbean for three years. After selling the boat, they returned to California to settle in Oceanside. He joined the California Carvers Guild and moved from Novice to Advanced and Master Carver. His fine wood carvings have brought him over twenty-five blue, first, and second place ribbons in California and Arizona. His carvings in a variety of different exotic woods include boats, cars, animals and jewelry.
He will show us a variety of his award-winning works and give us insights into how he transforms a block of wood or a found wood object into a work of art.
